Women have a right to champion for their needs without having to break a sweat. However, since they are considered the weaker sex, it is sometimes difficult for them to express themselves. For this reason, a day was set aside to celebrate women and the role they have to play in our world. International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women throughout history and in different nations around the world.

The International Women’s Day also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace has really helped women champion for their rights. On this day events are usually held worldwide. Women including business, community and political leaders are invited to give speeches at different events. Such kind of events may include conferences, dinner, luncheons, and seminars just to mention a few. The messages given during these events mostly focus on various themes affecting women such as innovation, importance of education and career opportunities.

Students are also not left behind when it comes to celebrating women’s day. This is because they participate in special lessons, presentations or debates about the importance of women in our society. In addition to this, they also discuss about the influence that women have and what may be affecting them. In some countries, students even go a step further by giving gifts to female teachers.

The International Women’s Day logo is in white and purple. These colours feature the symbol of venues, which is apparently the symbol of being female. The very first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19 in 1911.  The inaugural event included organized meetings and rallies. Actually, it was a big success in countries like Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia.

Ever since the inauguration of the International Women’s Day, countries have taken it seriously with some even making it a national holiday. Nations such as Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are good examples of countries with this day a national holiday. The International Women’s Day has proven beneficial to many women since they are able to achieve what they could not. Nations should therefore consider the rights of women by celebrating this day.
